Park City, Utah sits right in the heart of the Wasatch Mountains (part of the Rocky Mountain Range), just 36 miles east of Salt Lake City's International Airport. It is home to three world-class ski resorts, Deer Valley Resort, Park City Mountain Resort and The Canyons. The resorts receive an average snowfall of 350 inches annually.
One of the star attractions for visitors to Park City is the Olympic Park, just four miles north of the city. It's the home of the United States only recreational ski jumping program and of the Olympic bobsled ride program. A year from now, it will also be the site of 14 events for the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. In addition to training facilities and several competitions, visitors to the park can experience a bobsled ride, or self-steer an "ice rocket" which is similar to a luge. There are also recreational Nordic ski jumping lessons, followed by jumps off of either the 20-meter jump or the 40-meter jump.
Although many visitors come to Park City to ski, there are other winter recreational activities besides skiing and snowboarding. Huddle together on a horse-drawn sleigh, glide across the ice in a quaint village setting, at the outdoor ice-skating rink named as one of the top in Ski magazine, or snowmobile into the back country. For a different perspective, soar high above the ground in a hot-air balloon.
Back on solid ground, explore the town, full of restaurants, shops and art galleries. It's interesting just to walk down Main Street and look at the interesting mixture of old and new architecture. Park City has 64 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places and many of these buildings are on Main Street.
Park City got its during the mining area, with more than $400 million in silver mined from the surrounding hills during the peak of the mining industry here. The city incorporated in 1884, and 23 millionaires made their fortunes here, including George Hearst, the father of William Randolph Hearst. Although the mining industry here is long gone, more than 1,200 miles of tunnels wind through the surrounding mountains.
Take a trolley ride up or down Main Street and you'll be transported back in time - or at least down the street. The trolley runs from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. There is also free citywide bus service daily from 7:40 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. and between Main Street and Deer Valley or Park City Mountain Resort.
