Located approximately 35 minutes from the Salt Lake City International Airport, The Canyons is Utah's newest resort and is one of the "big three" resorts in Park City, forming a triumvirate, if you will, with Park City Mountain Resort and Deer Valley. The Canyon's roots stretch back to 1969 when local businessmen recognized the superb terrain of the Red and White Pine Canyon area and opened a ski area called Park City West. The name changed a few years later to Park West, in order to distinguish the resort from its neighbor, Park City.
The new resort would change names again and remain a small ski refuge until American Skiing Company acquired the area in the summer of 1997. At that time the resort consisted of only 1,400 acres and three mountain peaks. Since then, the ASC has spent more than $35 million on mountain improvements. Today, with the recent addition of the new mountain, Dreamscape, The Canyons is one of America's five largest ski resorts, offering a total of 3,625 acres of skiing and snowboarding terrain spread out over eight different peaks.
One major mountain improvement was providing skiers and snowboarders with lift access to Slide Mountain. The terrain on this peak is ideal for intermediate skiers and riders, with the top half running through mature pines and open alpine meadows, eventually turning into three trails that wind through an aspen forest. Slide Mountain is located to the south of Peak 5 and the area is served by a four-passenger chair lift. In addition, the opening of the Tombstone lift caused the single largest expansion of ski-acreage in North America, which in turn makes for some of the most diverse mountain terrain in existence.
In addition to world-class skiing and snowboarding, The Canyons offers four-star lodging, with the Grand Summit Resort Hotel and the Sundial Lodge serving as the two premier hotels. The Grand Summit is just steps from the Flight of the Canyons gondola, the primary method by which skiers and snowboarders get to top of the mountain. Amenities include an outdoor heated pool, hot tubs, childcare, a conference center, valet parking, spa treatments, and a full-service health club with sauna and steamroom. The Sundial Lodge offers 150 slopeside condominiums. The one- to three-bedroom units feature fully-equipped kitchens, and most have fireplaces and private balconies. The village development at The Canyons is an on-going process with the planned construction of the Westgate Resort and Whisper Ridge Townhomes, both of which are expected to be completed by the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
Another feature unique only to The Canyons is the Cabriolet lift, which carries day visitors from the parking lot into the heart of the lodging village. The repair, retail and rental shops - Canyon Mountain Sports and One Sweet Ride - are located in the village as well as a few bars and restaurants. On-mountain dining is big at the canyons, with six different restaurants to choose from. Cuisine ranges from Cajun fare to gourmet pizzas and many of the establishments offer excellent mountainside views. The resort also provides a ski and snowboard school, with programs ranging from introduction clinics to private lessons, as well as shuttle services, mountain tours, Sunday worship services, and private lockers.
