A visit to the Utah State Capitol, perched high above Salt Lake on a hillside, is a perfect place for a great view, not to mention well worth a look inside. The landmark is one of the first attractions spotted by visitors due to its location, and it is one of the finest examples of Renaissance revival-style architecture in the United States.
Its gleaming native granite walls and unique copper dome make this structure impressive to behold. Twenty-four Corinthian columns frame the unadorned front of this stately building. Huge sculpted lions guard the east and west entrances. Inside, a 165-foot-high interior rotunda is paneled with Georgian marble and adorned with WPA-painted canvasses and scenes dramatizing Utah history. A painted replica of the state bird, the seagull, sails serenely overhead in a domed mural.
